Fearless Friday, Happy Halloween and a Pitcher of Flowers

Happy Halloween, Day of the Dead, and All Saints Day!

If you celebrate Halloween are you expecting Trick or Treaters?

Trick or Treaters

Have you carved pumpkins and hung spooky spider webs?

Does your house look haunted and creepy?

I was feeling especially Witchy the other day…

When I feel Witchy, I paint flowers!

Let’s start with a pencil sketch

I indicated some shapes with dashed lines

This is a great way to establish the shapes or positions

and it’s easy to re-adjust them

I began by laying in a deep green background

to establish the light shapes of the hydrangeas and pitcher

Next I added the darkest flowers, the purple thistles

I began to add the rest of the flowers around these first 2 steps

I added the large roses with broad loose strokes

and even though the pink bled into the peachy rose,

I let it dry to repair or work around later

Green leaves were added,

and I added suggestions of yellow blooms

and began added shadows to define the white hydrangeas

The white pitcher got light gray washes where it is in the shadows

and a sharp edge with Payne’s Gray

More details are added to the hydrangeas

Pitcher of Flowers, 7″ x 10″ watercolor on mixed media paper

There is nothing better than beautiful flowers to brighten and uplift!

So, let’s go trick or treating!!

Be Fearless!

Lovely pitcher with flowers. You make it look so easy. Thank you for all of the Halloween tips, tricks and treats – ideas and recipes! You are multi-talented. What wonderful times you have with your family!

  2. I love seeing the step-by-step progression of your lovely paintings! And I really love the witch too!

you know i am fascinated with your step by step painting processes. i am taking mental notes. lovely, just lovely. hugs

    • Thank you Kari, now that you’re feeling better, you should take a class! There are a lot of great online ones I’d be happy to email you some suggestions if you’re interested…of course I know you must have a million things you want to do now that you’ve gotten some strength back! I hope you have a nice weekend and no spooks or goblins!

This painting makes my heart sing! Love the subject and the bright colors! The ease with which you produce your pieces of art (or, I should say, the way you MAKE it look easy!) is such a joy to watch. Absolutely love your Friday posts, Jenna.

I love watching how you work. When I get started, I’m so totally emmersed, I forget to take photos. Great post, love your candlesticks, too. Sandi

    • Thank you Sandi, I know what you mean, that happens a lot, I have to really focus when I want to create a post for Fearless Friday, some things just don’t work, they have to be painted without stops! Happy creating!

I love the pitcher of flowers, Jenna! How did y’all weather the storm? We lost power for over 24 hours and cable and internet for over 36….

    • Thank you Ricki Jill! Oh no, how terrible about your power, ours didn’t even flicker! My daughter {Mountain Brook} lost hers for 12, but she has a generator build in her new house, so jealous! And our beach house didn’t sustain any further damage, tarps on roof held!! Yay! Have a Happy Halloween!!

  7. I love the watercolor pitcher of flowers. So beautiful, Jenna. I am expecting my two little princesses and they will be all. Have. Wonderful weekend!

Fun, little witchy. Beautiful flowers. In NM the governor sent out a LOUD Emergency Alert on the cell phones that made me jump. “EXTREME NM virus risk. Stay safe, NO non-household contacts. Celebrate Halloween at home.” She is special.
