Creations, MacKenzie-Childs Inspired Jewelry Chest & Platter

This month I decided to paint a chest of drawers
I’ve had in my stash for quite a while
One of the upsides of the past year for me, is using what I have
and creating, without shopping…
I have a passion for all things MacKenzie-Childs
and decided to paint this chest with patterns inspired by MKC
I used markers to draw designs in a sketchbook
for reference while I painted
The drawers were easy to take out
and the hardware was held in place by bendable claps
so I was able to take that off easily also
I painted the chest white and when that was dry
I began adding black and white checks,
using a flat square brush making rows of alternating checks
To make the checks perfect you could use painter’s tape
and section everything off,
but I’m not much for perfect…
And when it’s all done, you don’t notice any minor imperfections
Nothing complicated on the drawer fronts,
just bright colors and shapes
Red poppies were painted on the top in an abstract fashion,
with dabs of red and pink
Stems and centers were painted when petals were dry
I often paint several things at once,
to use up any leftover paint on my palette
and I grabbed a badly tarnished silver tray and painted it too
New life for an old treasure!

Such a cheery makeover for your chest courtesy of your paintbrush Jenna! Love the whimsy and fun combination of dots, stripes and blooms. So smart to do two projects at the same time to use the paint on your palette! Happy Thursday ♥

I don’t know why but when I saw the first photo of the chest(unfinished) for some reason I thought it was about night-stand height! And I thought, “That’s ambitious!” But the smaller size is perfect to go about anywhere and it’s so darned cheerful and cute! I love the checks and how you do them! Lots less stressful!

Jenna, This is so darn cute! You put a paintbrush and your creativity to something and WOW! What great outcomes! Now, I have to admit, I see some pink hidden Mickey Mouses in there, but they may be just because I live in the shadow of Walt Disney World here! The poppies and the Courtly Check are perfect and the tray turned out great too!

Thanks so much Andrea, I got the cabinet at Hobby Lobby, they have a big selection of unfinished wood pieces. I actually did sell painted glassware and decorative pieces to gift shops for about 15 years, now I am “retired” and just do it for fun

I fear my daughter and granddaughters would accuse me of hiding under a rock for not knowing of the MacKenzie-Childs style. It is so cute. I also have to admit that from the first pictures I thought you were painting something the size of a bedside table. I liked it even better when I saw the actual size. Question about the platter. Can it handle food and washing or is it strictly decorative?
I have been an avid fan of MacKenzie-Childs for years, but their pieces are pricey so I often create my own with a paint brush. The platter is mostly decorative, but you could use it for cookies with a doily. It could be sprayed with a clear sealer to protect the painted finish to make it more durable.
Jenna, you’ll never need to buy MC pieces when you can create your own that look so authentic! I love the happy colors in your jewelry chest and platter. It must make you smile every time you get ready in your bathroom! You are so talented! Thanks for sharing the process how you draw the designs first in your sketchbook. It’s very inspiring!
