Fearless Friday, Farm Fresh Eggs in Colored Pencil and a Printable

Being a huge MacKenzie-Childs fan,
I often sate my appetite for buying something, by drawing it instead
MacKenzie-Childs designs are so colorful and full of whimsy
I find them hard to resist …
These chicken pieces are crazy fun!
You might be wondering why I only drew a partial view of the compote…
Cropping your composition, or placing the subject off center
makes the picture much more interesting and eye catching
The photo reference for today’s drawing is from an old MacKenzie-Childs catalog
You can draw your subject free hand or trace it
There is a printable of this drawing at the end of the post
if you’d like to print it and color
I start with a pencil sketch {and an eraser!} and draw the subject,
making many adjustments as I go
and continue to adjust as I ink it
Once the subject is outlined in ink, the pencil is erased
I chose to use colored pencils for this
Colored pencils take more time than other mediums
but I find them incredibly relaxing
I put on a movie, and enjoyed leisurely building layers of colors
I started with the highlighted areas of the eggs,
using very light peach and yellow pencils
Then came several shades of brown
When the eggs were finished I started on the compote
doing the blue edge,
coloring the lightest areas first
and leaving some areas untouched for highlights

Next I colored the white areas of the bowls with a cream colored pencil
I added shadow areas with light pink and lavender pencils
Next came red and yellow
Then purple and orange,
using a dark and a light purple
Then several shades of green
and more aqua blue
Next I finished the chickens with red and orange
I filled in the black checks
and colored in the remaining areas

A few dots in the background and it was done

Juicy Details
I have a variety of colored pencil brands,
but I think my favorite is Prismacolor
I recommend this set by Prismacolor
I also have this set of 48 colored pencils from Bruynzeel Designs
They come in this great storage box that has drawers to keep them organized
It’s a sleek look to keep your space uncluttered
You can also get a boxed set of watercolor pencils too
which I am tempted to buy because I am crazy over the storage box

I also have this fun set of 10,
Wanderlust and Wildflowers given to me by a special friend
It’s a great set to buy and try
before you invest in a larger and more expensive set
A final word on colored pencil,
it is the easiest art medium to control
and “it plays well with others”
It can be used with markers to soften and shade,
and with watercolors, pastels and acrylics for a variety of effects
Flowering Cactus was done with marker, ink, and colored pencil

Thank you for showing your process! I have a few color pencils but not nearly the number I need to do this kind of beautiful shading. Time to shop!
Thank you Carole, I’m so happy I’ve inspired you to color!
Jenna, I am a huge MC fan, too. I swoon over the catalog every time one arrives. Your have captured that pretty compote beautifully! I hope you have a most blessed and beautiful day!
Thank you so much Shannon, I love to draw and paint things from their catalogs 🙂
Jenna, I enjoy receiving the MKC catalog, they are so inspirational. Your art work always brings smiles, I just love the “farm fresh eggs”, and maybe I should try my coloring hand with your printable. EM loves to color and I often sit down with her to color. Wishing you a wonderful sunny weekend!
Thank you Pam, I’m glad EM loves to color, and that you color with her!
Thank you for today’s post, Jenna. In the beginning of the lockdown last year, I purchased the Prismacolor pencils you recommended and ordered some coloring books. This new hobby helped greatly to get through the isolation and anxiety of this past year. I never knew how to “shade in” my pictures and your tutorial today will really help take my pictures to a different level! I’ve already printed out the printable and am looking forward to following your lead! Many thanks for you and your Fearless Fridays!
Oh good Rosie! I am thrilled to hear that coloring has brought you therapy. I need to use colored pencils more often they really are a joy to work with and a great way to relax 💕
Gosh, Jenna. I so love your zest for color. In these days of dare I say boring white everywhere…I just really love coming to your ‘color spot’ posts!. MacKenzie Child is a great model—and much cheaper to paint then own! Grins, Sandi
Thank you so much Sandi, I do love color!
I really don’t use my colored pencils as often as I should, though the watercolor ones a bit more. (I often will do my outline in a corresponding or muted color of WC pencil, which blends into the painting when I get going. This color is totally fabulous and I love the checks!
I need to play with WC pencils more, and great tip to use them for sketching, I’m going to try that!
LOVE the eggs! So vibrant and beautiful!
Thanks Dorothy!
I love watching your pictures develop as we get to watch your process. Your descriptions of how you use the various mediums doesn’t take the magic away. It just makes it that much more interesting.
Thank you Linda, coloring with pencils is fun and relaxing
Beautiful, Jenna! 💚😊 Love watching your process and seeing your piece come to life.
Thanks Patty Anne 🎨
Love it Jenna and your inspiration MKC catalog photo too! Glad you have enjoyed the pencils ♥
I do love the pencils Mary, they always remind me of you and the box is so pretty on my tiered art tray 🙂
What a great way to keep the MC budget from getting out of hand! Love your drawing and you are right, off center is so visually appealing. Love this Jenna, you create such fabulous work. Have a beautiful week………
Thank you Emily, I love to draw things from their catalogs. Yes it sounds like great weather this week, enjoy your garden!
