Fearless Friday, Wet into Wet Fast Florals

It’s been a busy week, and when I’m short on time,
my favorite way to squeeze in art is painting fast florals
I keep a Pinterest board of flower photos and paintings for quick reference
so I always have inspiration photos at my finger tips

“Wet into Wet” is a fun watercolor technique
that is perfect for fast and loose florals
Begin by applying clear water on areas
where you want to place the main blooms
Then drop color into the water and let it bleed and flow
You can turn or tip your paper to guide movement if you wish
You don’t want to over think it,
just hint at the flower shapes and leaves

Once the blooms were placed I added leaves and greens
to fill out the composition

Next a few petal details and the sunflower centers
Flower centers and darkening

To punch the painting up and give it some drama I added ink sketching
Nothing too serious, just very loosely indicating shapes and form,
more like scribbling or doodling, than drawing

“Fast Floral” 7″ x 10″ watercolor on mixed media paper

Here are some other examples of fast and loose wet into wet florals
The one below is a combination of VERY loose shapes,
with the ink sketch bringing the flowers to life

This one features shapes only, letting the imagination “fill in the garden”

The delicate orchids were created with small bleeding pink blossoms,
large green leaves and a splatter for accent and drama

These are loose hydrangeas,
again the shapes are just suggested,
then outlined with ink to provide separation
The colors are reflected in the shadows on the table for added interest

I hope you’ll try this fast and loose wet into wet technique
and please send me photos if you’d like to share your creations
Have fun and Be Fearless!

I’ve been outlining and adding detail with ink since high school when I really started drawing more. Not always — sometimes it’s not right. But when it is, BOY! It really punches it out. I love this — I don’t do this technique often and I’m not very good at it. More practice is required. But how I love it. And I love seeing how through the step outs, the piece gets more dynamic with each layer.
Thanks Jeanie, I’ve found it to be much more successful the less exact I am about the outlines, more like free scribbling than carefully drawing…definitely a fun technique!
Love your watercolor garden of blooms Jenna! ♥
