My craft was inspired by a craft
that Gail from Purple Hues and Me shared earlier this year,
she made rope placemats and decoupaged flowers on them
I thought it might be fun to paint a place mat …

My inspiration was summery melamine plates
I recently found at Hobby Lobby

I loved the colorful abstract tropical pattern
and decided to paint a straw mat to match them
I started with the big aqua palm leaf
An abstract design is a good choice for this rough surface
I started by outlining the shapes
and then filling them in
I didn’t copy the pattern exactly,
just tried to recreate the general feel

I used similar shapes and colors,
but didn’t paint every single pattern that is on the plates

The black accents really made it come to life

At this point I declared the design finished
and painted in a light blue background
with a fairly dry brush so the straw would still show through

I couldn’t wait to try it on a table!
I think this design brings a tropical feel to whole room

Happy Summer!
The placemats and plates are from Hobby Lobby
I used acrylic craft paint for this project
