Fearless Friday, Valentine Card Ideas

With January almost over {Yay!}

I thought it would be fun to think about Valentine card ideas

and use watercolor, markers and ink to create original cards

You can make cards that are romantic or whimsical

Let’s get started with watercolor

Make a stroke like a question mark,

then make a reverse question mark stroke to form a heart

I doesn’t have to be perfect,

you can make adjustments as you paint in the middle

I painted some abstract flowers around the heart

with simple strokes

You can see a tutorial for several ways to paint

abstract flowers here

For a final touch I deepened the pink around the top of the heart

When the paper and paint are dry you can add a sentiment

Here’s another idea,

paint 4-5 hearts in various sizes and colors

Then you can dress them up with some doodles

Draw a whimsical flower pot full of blooming hearts

Then fill it in with color and patterns

I made a printable of this to color if you don’t want to draw your own

Note: use card stock for the printables

if you want to use them for cards

You can also paint some “bleeding” hearts

Paint a path with clear water before painting your heart

Then paint your heart,

then tilt the paper to let the paint flow

down the water line

I painted the hearts pale,

then after they dried I went back

and deepened the color in the centers

There is a free printable of bleeding hearts here

You can add your own sentiment

One more fun and easy thing to draw is a gnome

There is a free printable of this Love Gnome here

I hope you take time for a little Valentine fun!

In case you missed it, yesterday I shared

an easy Pretty Posy Floral Frame

which can be used for Valentine cards or displays

  1. Jenna, what beautiful ideas for cards. I will use the question mark to see if I can improve my inability to draw a heart! I love a hand-made card. EM and EK make them for me almost weekly. Happy cold Friday!

Valentine’s Day was a lot more fun when I was in the classroom. 😉 Kids love it so much! Your cards, however, bring out a lovely side of Valentine’s Day, and I am looking forward to your tablescapes. Have a great day!
