Fearless Friday, Snow Drops with Colored Pencil

I did very little art over the holidays,

and am going to do the January Doodlewash art challenge

to try to get back in the grove

I won’t do every day, which is what I love about this art challenge,

you can do it whenever you can and if you don’t like the prompt,

you can do something else!

I painted #2 polar bear and you can see how rusty I am,

he looks kind of wonky 😂

I decided to go back to the basics to get my confidence back

with a subject I’m familiar with,

flowers, and use colored pencils

I haven’t heard of #4 snow drops before, aren’t they pretty?

I started with a pencil sketch

and then inked over it and erased the pencil

I made a printable for you if you want to color this

you can download it here

I started by coloring the lightest areas with a pale yellow

Then I added some shadow areas with lilac

I used 3 shades of green, lime, grass and dark green on the stems

I added more purple and darker yellow to the shadow areas at the tips

and inside the petals

You can add interest to white flowers by exaggerating

the shadow areas with color

“Snow Drops” 5″ x 7″ colored pencil on mixed media paper

Happy coloring

and Cheers to a creative 2023!

  1. I really need to grow some snowdrop! I love your design and thanks for that. It seems I rarely use my colored pencils — thanks for the reminder!

  2. So pretty! It is always so exciting when those first little snowdrops appear.

What a cute project! Such nice work and thanks for the download.

  4. Your snow drops are beautiful and even your rusty sketch is much better than anything I could do. I always love your drawings. Thanks.

Pretty, Jenna! We have snow drops in our region. Looking forward to seeing them!

Snow drops are new to me too. They are so beautiful and delicate. Your rendition is beautiful too.

I was so jealous of my granddaughter at Christmas when she received a 64 set of primacolor pencils….which was always my choice as a child artist. Fun post—I finished a novel since the 1st, and since it has percolated since 2007…it is a definite YAY! Have a great 2023!!!! Sandi

I love your snowdrops drawing, especially the colors. What kind of colored pencils are you using? I like them!

  9. You put a smile on my face with your artful creation of snow drop flowers!

Well done Jenna! Yes, I have heard of snow drops ( flowers) just hoping we don’t get the “real thing” for several more days or weeks. Lol Our Michigan winters are very long and so I am enjoying our unseasonable warmer weather of the high 30’s and low 40’s! Hehe

    • Hi Cyndi, I’m glad you’re enjoying some warmer temps! Our Christmas weekend was one of the coldest on record with highs only in the teens and low twentys, but then we had a week of 70s! I will take 70 any time I can get it!! Happy 2023!

  11. Mary says:

So pretty Jenna! My grandmother had snowdrops planted in her yard. We are just a ‘titch’ warm for them to grow well here. Your doodlewash prompts are interesting, I had to look up what a ‘musk ox’ was. 🙂 Looking forward to your owl on the 22nd! ♥

  12. Nancy says:

Oh how I Love snowdrops! I have them growing at the Lakehouse! My Mom planted them 50+ years ago!
