Fearless Friday, Crabs

Feelin’ Crabby?
Let’s paint some crabs today!
You can paint them blue with orange claws…

Or orange with blue claws
To paint a crab start with a curved blue stroke,
mixing just a touch of royal blue with turquoise
Then top the blue stroke with an orange stroke with 2 humps
Where the orange covers the blue
a new dark is formed
which will help give the crab some depth once it’s finished
Now add a swash of yellow orange thru the center
Next add the “arms”
2 stacked fat strokes on each side of the body
the strokes closest to the body are larger
than the top shorter strokes
Now add 4 short strokes along the bottom for legs
and a blue stroke at the top of the arm
Start the blue stroke at the top of the short orange arm stroke
and stroke to the right for the left claw,
and stroking to the left for the right claw,
curving the strokes slightly and bringing to a point
These will be part of the main claws
Finish claws by adding a small pointy blue stroke
under the larger claw stroke
Here’s what my palette looks like,
turquoise, cobalt, black, orange, yellow orange,
yellow and more orange
Black dots add the finishing touches
Use the tip of the brush handle and dip it in paint
Press down firmly to form dots
and make larger dots for the “eyes”
using a bigger brush handle tip
Watch out, he’s ready to crawl away!
I added a row of black dots along the inner edge
of the platter for a finishing touch
So next time you’re feelin’ crabby, get out your paint brush and get busy!

Thanks so much for going “crabbing” with me today!
Crabby Ideas

Paint crabs on a plastic or galvanized bucket to take to the beach
like these Shrimp Buckets here
You can also pack small individual buckets with utensils,
napkins and everything needed for a shrimp boil
and use the buckets for the shrimp peels
If you want to paint on glass or ceramics,
be sure to use curable paint especially made for glass,
I use Folk Art Enamel Glossies
If you don’t want to paint a crab,
you can get some cute crabby things in my Society 6 Shop here

“Ocean Things” is available on 45 different items
