Limelight Hydrangeas with Acrylic

It has been an unusually rainy week at the beach,

so I haven’t been able to paint on the porch

I have been watching Wimbledon and reading

which I’ve really enjoyed,

but sadly I’ve no new paintings to share

Limelight Hydrangeas are one of my favorite summer flowers

They are at their peak right now, mid summer, in parts of the South

Today I am going to re-share this acrylic painting of hydrangeas

I did of my friend Pam’s beautiful garden

The top photo is from one of her Everyday Living posts

The photo underneath is the picture “painted” with the Waterlogue app

Waterlogue is a great way to simplify a complex subject,

breaking it down into simpler masses of color

Then I printed both versions out for reference while painting

I used a limited color palette and a black underpainting

Mixing your own color variations from a limited palette

keeps your painting cohesive

I made a few strokes establish where the main blooms will be

Next the sky, grass and some greens are added

Building the fence with layers of color

  Details to the blooms

  Adding leaves and other details

Lightening the sky and finishing blooms

  All done

You can visit Pam here to see more of her incredible gardens

Jenna, I am so happy you shared this again. I love my painting so much and it has found a home in the Sunshine Cottage. I have two pillows and a tote bag that I have enjoyed. One of the pillows will be in my Tea On Tuesdays upcoming post. Your talent is amazing and thank you for the shout out! Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. This is really lovely, Jenna. I always enjoy Pam’s hydrangeas — and all her flowers. To see them so beautifully interpreted by your painting is a real joy. I love the softness of the colors in both the photo and your painting, perfectly captured. I don’t remember seeing it before, so thanks for the reshare!

Beautiful painting! I’m sorry your beach time isn’t conducive to painting this week, but I bet it is fun and relaxing to read with the rain beating down outside.
