Fearless Friday, Watercolor Amaryllis

DD and CC gave me this watercolor set for Christmas

Even though I’ve got tons of art supplies,

it’s always exciting to get something new!

It has 50 different colors,

comes with several types of brushes,

and has a place to mix colors right in the lid

It’s travel size, about 8″ x 5″ x 1 1/2″

It came with a blank color chart sheet

The first thing you should do when you have new paint or markers

is to make a color chart

and this one was labeled to match the color palette in the box

Let’s try it out!

I used this drawing from Pixabay as a model

and 2 photos from Pinterest

for the painting

A pencil drawing to begin

I started with the root ball and worked my way up

Once I was satisfied with the drawing,

I went over it with .01 a waterproof ink liner pen

and erased the pencil

If you want to color it you can download a free printable here

I think it would be beautiful done with colored pencils

If you want to paint it with watercolor

print it on watercolor or mixed media paper

I smeared the petal on the right

and tried to lift the smear with water

but the paper started deteriorating,

so I decided to fix it later when I did the background

For the background,

I applied clear water in a large area with a big round brush

and dropped pink into the water and let it bleed and blend

I turned the painting upside down to do the background in the top areas

“Watercolor Amaryllis” 5″ x 7” watercolor and ink on mixed media paper

This is an amaryllis done with colored pencils

Have fun and

Jenna, I love amaryllis and have a late bloomer on my table that I’m joining this week. Great solution and fix for your smudge with the background! Happy Friday ♥

Jenna, the amaryllis is beautiful! DD and CC know how to select a great gift for you. Stay safe today and warm over the next week. Brrr…it is going to be freezing!

  4. Beautiful! I will enjoy your paining, as my real one sent up a stalk and bud but then it just flopped over and died. Never had this happen before!

  5. Now THAT is a fabulous wc set. I added it to both my wish and shopping lists! (yeah, I need another wc palette like a hole in the head.) Love the color chart and the pretty case! Oh, and your amaryllis is lovely, too!

We received three bulbs for Christmas–red, white, and pink. They have just passed their prime, so your post was a welcome surprise. I would never have thought to turn the paper upside down. I really need to start thinking outside the box again. Your Christmas present was perfect for you; I’m sure they had fun picking it out!

    • Thank you Linda, you can’t ever have too many art supplies in my opinion 🙂 Turning the paper upside down helps when you’re drawing too, sometimes it helps get the perspective correct. I love amaryllis, how pretty to have 3 different colors!

I’m of the opinion that “she with the most colors—WINS”. What a great gift and yours is excellent too! Sandi

Jenna, the amaryllis painting is beautiful and what a clever fix for the smudge. DD and CC chose a wonderful gift for you and how great is it that it’s a travel size and can go back and forth with you if need be. I hope the nasty weather passes you by – it seems like it’s cold everywhere!
