Fearless Friday, Daisies & Watermelon with Gouache

We are painting with gouache today,

a medium that shares qualities with watercolor and acrylic

Gouache can be thinned with water

and applied like watercolor

or it can be painted directly on paper remaining opaque

In the Cardinal painting below,

everything is done with watercolor except the snow,

which was put on the branch with white gouache

This photo caught my eye and I decided to paint it with gouache

{when I printed it out to use for reference my printer was low on ink

that’s why it’s streaky 🙂 }

I’m back in my favorite spot this week,

painting on the porch at the beach house

I can watch the kids swimming and the boats going by

while I paint

I started with a very light pencil sketch

Then I started painting the watermelon

Several colors of gouache were mixed together

to get the watermelon shade~

red, white, peach, orange

I thinned it with just enough water to make it apply smoothly

and still be opaque

Next I added more shapes on top

to capture the varying shades of the melon

The vase was indicated with a very thin blue gouache wash

I began to paint the rind and the daisies with shades of gray,

very pale yellow and pink

Next came filling in the rind and the daisy stems

Next I added white petals to the daisy on top of the gray petals

Daisy centers, watermelon seeds and shadows

and this painting comes to life

To finish, I added a light blue wash with watercolor

“Daisies and Watermelon” 12″ x 12″ gouache and watercolor on watercolor paper

Have you ever painted with gouache?

It really should be my favorite medium

since it has the qualities of both of my other favorite mediums,

acrylic and watercolor, but I am struggling with it…

Any tips would be appreciated!

  6. I’ve painted with gouache and yes, I struggle too. (I’ll often use some white gouache in my watercolors, though.) I love this piece — it’s cheery and happy. And so summer!

  7. Your creative work makes me hungry for a cold slice of watermelon!

Beautiful! I love seeing your process. I have not painted with anything. All of my art is digital, because I need to be able to correct 1000 times without destroying my paper. 😀

Jenna, I don’t know anything about gouache (or any other medium for that matter) but I think your painting turned out beautifully! I love “watching” you paint and it must be so fun to paint at your beach house. Thanks for bringing on a taste of summer!

Another lovely summery painting! I, like everyone else, love to watch your process, and imagine that I’m in your beautiful painting spot. I’m happy to do the reading while you do the painting! 🙂
