Fearless Friday, Poinsettias

My birthday was Wednesday and I’ve been busy celebrating

and getting ready for a birthday cocktail party

I’m having tonight,

so my paint brush has been idle…

I planned to paint poinsettias today,

my favorite holiday flowers

Since I didn’t have time to paint,

I remembered this watercolor one from the archives

that I am re-sharing today because it’s one of my favorites

I like to begin with a pencil sketch

when the subject is complicated like this one

with so many petals and leaves

I especially like pink poinsettias

They are full of so many beautiful colors and tones

I bounced around painting different areas

so the layers could be drying as I went to a different spot

As I filled in the shapes with color I began erasing the sketch

Once pencil lines are painted over it’s hard to get rid of them

I started laying in the background

to give the petals even more definition

More work on the petals…

Jumping around between different areas also helps

keep everything balanced and cohesive

I filled in the rest of the background

with very loose leaf shapes with a large round brush

After the paint was dry, I added some accents with ink

“Pink Poinsettias” watercolor on watercolor paper

Happy Painting,

Be Fearless!

Happy Belated Birthday–Mine is the 12th, so we are both wild, outspoken, honest, truth seekers according to our horoscopes. Hope your day was great. I had a chick flick birthday party, with pizza, cake and ice cream and a movie–Where the Crawdads Sing. Just me, my daughter and granddaughter. It was swell, hope your day was fantastic! Georgia Gal
