Adding Drama

Two simple techniques can really add drama

to your drawings and paintings

The “less is more” technique and the “partial Image tecnique”

These techniques can really draw in the viewer’s eye

and stimulate their imagination~

Provide just enough information in your artwork

for the viewer to imagine the entire scene

This simple ballerina tutu is just a few simple brush strokes~

yet when you look at it,

you can’t help but try to visualize her arms and legs,

twirling and movement

This pastel called “Looking Down” draws you in with vibrant colors

and then makes you wonder what she’s looking at

Is she reading a book or a magazine?

I wonder what her face and hair look like…

This painting, “Abstract Landscape”

is just a combination of green, yellow and brown strokes,

but is easily recognized as a path through the woods

When you can’t decide what to paint,

begin with wet paper

and put a few drops of paint on to bleed

and a add a few splatters too

What do you see? I immediately saw a flamingo,

all it needed was a few strokes for his head, legs and feathers

“This Little Piggy” is just a couple of color strokes and sketchy lines

and while some will think he’s unfinished,

I think his sweet personality comes right through

“Rainbow Girl” is combination of the two dramtic techniques~

She is created with simple strokes and ink,

making you wonder what she looks like and where she is…

and then because you only see half of her

makes it even more interesting

Only showing part of something holds your interest much longer

“Sidewalk Cafe” is another example of the partial image technique,

as you look at the painting you try to visualize

the neighborhood and what’s on the other side of the tree

I hope you will experiment with these techniques,

they are a ot of fun

and you might be amazed at what you come up with!

I adore the flamingo!! You are so talented!

  2. I agree on the partial image — it can really draw you in. And I love doing the drops, blobs and smears. My fave here might be the piggie. He’s darling!

This was a fascinating art LESSON! Jenna, you are a marvel and you inspire me. I am going to try taking a few drops, etc. and turn that into a sketch. I am not talented, but I enjoy trying things you suggest, you make me brave enough to give it a shot. You’re a keeper! Georgia Girl

  4. Some of these abstracts look so easy, but I’m learning are more difficult than they seem. Especially if you are the kind – like me, who tries to fill in details WAY too much! It’s fun practicing. Thanks for the good tips.

What an inspiration you are! I enjoyed the Tutu and the sidewalk cafe.
I will try the wet paper and add a few drops of color technique. Who knows where it will lead me!
    Enjoy your weekend!
