Home Decor, Beach House Tour part 1, Mermaids

For the next few Mondays I am going to take you to the beach with me and give you a tour of our little cottage by the sea. May is absolutely my favorite month on the Gulf Coast. It marks the beginning of a long, fun filled summer. I will be spending lots of time here now, lucky me, and I would love to show you around…
Come on in!
Don’t ring the door bell though, it’s been broken since hurricane Ivan…
When I started taking photographs I realized I have quite an obsession with Mermaids! I knew I liked mermaids but I am sort of shocked at the multitude I found!
This swimming mermaid is a floorcloth that is hung on the wall in the Master bathroom. Kids, dogs and sand equals bare tile floors around here!
This glazed metal mermaid has copper wire curls embellished with mini shells and beads
This scary fairy fish is made from pull tabs and bottle caps
A painted vanity bench swims with more “she~fish.” These mermaids are all swimming around the Master bathroom so I think we’ll start our tour in the Master suite~
Come on in! Suite is a stretch because this room is pretty tiny,
It is painted a bright periwinkle blue. It does have a vaulted ceiling which makes it feel bigger. All the ceilings in the house are painted a pale sky blue.
A big window with a view overlooking the pool, dock and water helps expand the space also. Soon HH will put out the deck furniture and the “Club,” as we call it, will be open for business!
I bought this bed years ago, just fell in love with it. Yes it’s huge for this small room, but I love it anyway. HH threatens to saw off the posts every so often because he can’t see the TV from his side, but I tell him that’s what the chair is for, the bed is for sleeping!
Directly across from the bed is the Master bathroom
We gutted and redid this bathroom 2 summers ago…HHjr, my son, is a contractor and owns a tile business, so he has access to all kinds of wonderful stuff. These were some of the newest trends in the summer of 2010
The counter tops are covered with sea glass tiles and the backsplash is a mini ceramic & glass subway tile
I bought this sink/faucet combo on line at sinkuniverse.com, it’s too fabulous
There used to be a garden tub where the shower now is and it was HIDEOUS. It was too shallow to bathe in and it was surrounded by large pinkish purple tiles 3/4 of the way up the walls. I can’t believe I can’t find any “before” photos, I probably never took any because it was so awful! We originally wanted to install a glass wall and door here but I really like having it open with just a curtain to pull when showering. No pesky glass to clean and it eliminates any mildew problems. We will probably install glass eventually but we’re on “island time” here and things are slower.
the shower floor is river rock in the aqua tones. The vertical stripe of the same backsplash tile mimics a waterfall cascading down the wall and onto the floor. The floor is laid with the same neutral gray tile as the shower, in a larger size.
This corner used to be a lovely pre-fab “plastic” shower unit which was torn out and the space was turned into deep shelves for storage space.
This row of tiles with hooks is ready for wet bathing suits.
There is a small walk-in closet for our hanging clothes, nothing fancy, just functional…
Come back next week for more of the tour, we are bound to find more mermaids and other surprises!
The quilt and shams are from Pottery Barn
Polka Dot sheets from the Comfort Store
Mirror and painted mermaids are from JMdesigns Gallery

Your beach house is beautiful, Jenna. I love the colors you chose. Absolutely perfect!
I can’t wait to see more.
It looks like you have a wonderful get away place, perfect for spending time with family and friends. We used to have a house in Galveston, and like you, I loved being there in May before the days got too hot.
Thanks so much for the tour! 🙂 So lovely — and I am totally needing your sink/faucet!!
Kenley
hi jenna the beach house is so very pretty. I love your mermaids! I think it is a great theme for a house on the sea. Where is it located? a few years back I met with 6 other women in a house on Dauphin Island and that looks like a house near by!! You sure have made some nice changes–
hi Cathy Thanks for your lovely comments! I bet you had a blast on your girls trip to Dauphin Island! Our house is a little east of there, in Orange Beach Al. It’s not quite as secluded as Dauphin Island but we are in a gated private community called Ono Island just off Perdido Key. Lots of boating there and white sand. Thanks so much for visiting, Jenna
Beautiful!! The bathroom turned out great, and I love the bed and its size. 🙂 ~Zuni
What a great getaway spot, Jenna! I LOVE the mini subway tiles and the way they appear to “spill” over the ledge of the shower floor! So neat! I totally agree with your decision to go curtain instead of door there, too. Who wants to spend time scrubbing a door when they can be lounging by the pool? Your master suite color scheme is really great, and it would be very soothing for me despite its bright colors. I’d probably have to go potty more often than usual, though, because I’d be thinking of water constantly!!! 🙂
All the mermaids are really cute. VERY creative, too! I love the one with the copper wire hair!!!
Please tell your husband that the bed posts are one of the coolest features of the bed and that if he cuts them down we will all testify on YOUR behalf at trial! 🙂 🙂 🙂
You are so funny! I appreciate your support on the important bedpost matter!
Thanks for the tour! I love anything “Beach”. I plan to one day have a beach home. Right now I have to settle for my camper at the coast.
Come visit me sometime http://www.lifeawayfromtheofficechair.blogspot.com
Have a great week!
Beautiful beach house! I love the all the color!
Oh My Word!!! This is lovely and all of your decor is gorgeous. I love the pretty “water” colors, the view out the window is amazing. Thanks tons for joining Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
Your blog is awesome! I’m so glad you left a comment on my post so that I found you. I love your blog name 🙂 I don’t paint but I would like to specialize (so to speak) in making great aprons… too many irons in the fire.
Your beach house is dreamy. I am in love with the glass bowl bathroom sink and the glass tile back splash, but the entire house is to die for! Enjoy!
What a gorgeous bath~ the tile combinations and sink are stunning! Brilliant idea to avoid the glass and use a curtain instead! I’ll be thinking about you every time I scrub my glass door 🙂 Love your mermaids!
Thank you for leaving a comment on my painted tray :). I hopped over to see your blog and fascinated by your lovely beach cottage. I have a friend in New Zealand who fancies herself as a Mermaid, I will send some of these images to her, I especially love the little mermaid with wire hair. She is an artist and actually bought herself a mermaid tail….and swims with it, I told her she will have to watch out for the fisherman :).
Thank you for sharing, I will take some more time to look around your lovely blog.
Lee
Thanks Lee, I can’t believe your friend has a mermaid tail, that is crazy fun!! Thanks so much for your visit!
The blue and green bedroom is so pretty. I love your house!
Hi, fell in love with your beautiful bathroom, the colors you chose are fabulous..I am now doing my bathroom in the sea glass colors too, I love the look…any chance you could tell me the name of the lovely vessel sink you bought, seems the website is no longer in business, thanks for your time, and loved your beach bathroom…
Aren’t you sweet! I’m sorry the website is no longer up, that remodel was 5 years ago but we remodeled another bath recently with a similar sink that you can see on this link http://thepaintedapron.com/2014/04/27/home-decor-finally-finished-beach-house-addition/ This company appears to still be in business, hope this helps!
Ok, I found the link upon a second look. I think I’m losing it today! I do love the aqua colors and glass look tile.
thanks Bonnie, have a great weekend! >
