Our little house is 4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, 2000 square feet but it lives large for it’s size with an open concept great room and kitchen with french doors flowing out onto an arbor covered sitting and dining porch. Today let’s peak at the other 3 bedrooms…there’s nothing fancy, just a lot of bright colors and cheap fanciful touches with easy to maintain spaces and furnishings.

Each bedroom has a theme, this one is “Caribbean Soul.”  Twin wicker headboards are side by side with twin beds made up with a mattress accessory that forms them into a king size bed.  This  “king” bed can easily be separated into twin beds.  There are twin linens and comforters on hand to easily change this from a couples room to a room for 2 children or 2 friends.

With yellow walls and lots of bright colors, this is a sunny welcoming spot

A papier mache parrot head is a subtle nod to Jimmy Buffet and the craft store mirror is embellished with a bright plaid ribbon

The TV sits on a palm tree and wave painted corner cabinet

And an old window is painted with Caribbean style houses and hung with the same bright plaid ribbon

The switch plate is painted with an abstract sun, clouds and blue waves

This room is called ““A day at the Beach.”

The headboard is made from 2 large shutter units I bought on sale at Lowe’s.  One of these days I’ll get around to distressing the finish a little…everything is a continual work in progress around here.

The toys live in this queen bedroom along with a secretary that holds my art supplies.  The shelf unit tucked in the corner beside the desk holds clothes, diapers and books when the grandchildren visit, and keeps them hidden but accessible.

and a fish rack is ready to hang hats and cover-ups.  The rack was made by a local artist, a simple tin fish shape painted and attached to boards.

The light switch in here is painted with some tropical fish to match the bedspread and polka dots mimicking bubbles

This room is “Surf’s Up!,” with twin beds simply pushed together, NOT  made as one, with surfboard comforters.  The counter height chairs flanking the beds act as night stands.  The beds can be separated in seconds if desired.  The bedrooms all have to be flexible to accommodate different guest combinations.

The beds have grass bedskirts which drive the guys absolutely insane…especially when they vacuum! Ha, you can imagine!

This ugly lamp shade got a light sponging of several colors for an easy coordinating touch

I learned from this light switch not to paint the finger pads, that won’t work! Painting the borders works great though, I used glossy acrylic paints and they haven’t worn at all.

This is just a bunch of abstract shapes and colors with a little gold foil added for pizazz.  Spray with a clear coat varnish if using something delicate like gold foil.

This palm tree is basically just a few brush strokes, the trunk strokes are Xs and the fronds are just groups of strokes going in the same direction

You don’t have to be an artist to paint switch plates,  color and simple shapes are a great way to make a cheap plastic light switch cover go from ho-hum to fabulous!
