Fearless Friday, Double Bacon Cheeseburger
Everybody says “American as Apple Pie,” but I say, “What’s more American than a Bacon Double Cheeseburger?”
I was hungry while I was flipping through magazines the other day
I ran across an article on burgers in the June Food Network magazine
So irresistible, but no smoke was coming from our grill…
So I decided to paint myself a burger!
I started at the top and worked my way down
Adding layers of color
the layering of colors establishes the form and adds details
Open wide!
The best thing about this burger….
It’s very low calorie!

The Process
I felt pretty fearless trying this more realistic style of painting. It was easier than I thought it would be, patience is the key to let it take shape gradually. As the burger began to take shape, I got caught up and stopped taking photos, but you can see the color layers in the close-ups
My summer studio is my porch where I often get distracted, watching birds, boats and swimmers, so this painting was a leisurely process, and was finished in several hours
My rule for successful results is to paint in 2 sessions
First session: I do a quick sketch with paint to establish the composition. With watercolor I use a very light wash, making note of where I want the whites to be. Then I start adding more color layers and paint until the painting is well established, and stop as soon as I get tired or sloppy
Second session: I wait at least a day or 2, to look at it with fresh eyes, and then add the final finishing touches, remembering, less is more
NOTE: I realize everyone has their own styles and techniques, rights, wrongs, and “how tos.” I am simply sharing things that work for me and things I discover in my painting adventures

OMG Jenna – Your burger looks juicy and delicious enough to eat! So satisfying and no calories! 🙂 Thanks for sharing your process. funny I still consider myself a newbie. I first tried watercolor a year ago – and art was completely foreign to me. hard to believe people have wanted to buy. I’m quite lucky – LOL! It is so much fun – huh? Thanks my friend!
Oh boy that turned out so “edibly” delightful! I have zero talent for painting so I always appreciate seeing what others create. I love a good burger- I recently had bacon jam on a burger and fell in love! I love melted cheese, bacon, mustard and mayo on mine!

It’s 6:30 am here, and that burger STILL looks delicious! Thank you for showing how watercolor paintings are done: artistic ability totally eludes me, but it sure is fun to see how an artist works, Jenna. My favorite burger has fried onions and mushrooms on it as well: sloppy, but yummy!

I love this! A bacon/cheeseburger is one of my all-time favorite comfort foods. There is a new place called Boots that has opened up in our village. We tried the BCB yesterday — very tasty! (But nothing beats the one at Primeaux). Your painting is outstanding! Some good advice, too.

Your burger looks delicious! I do like you often on sewing projects. I get all caught up in what I’m doing and forget to take all in-process pictures. So…I understand completely. It’s easy to see, though the things that you added between the two pictures. Those are things that really made a huge difference! As in most things, its the details that make the most impact. Thanks for sharing another great tut! 🙂
I love it Jenna!…if you can’t eat one…paint one….and it looks fabulous!….I love burgers…When we go out to eat, I will order a burger…my hubby a salad, then when the server comes with the food, they always give my burger to my hubby and so on…Nope…give ME the burger!!!…Love my burger loaded with lots of goodies!!!
