Fearless Friday, Pam’s Hydrangeas
My painting inspiration today came from Pam at Everyday Living, a long time blogging friend and a fellow Alabamian
Pam and her “Renaissance Man” have the most incredible garden which she often posts about. I am always drooling over her gorgeous blooms and I hope she doesn’t mind that I borrowed a photo so I could paint her limelight hydrangeas peaking over the fence on their property
The top photo is from an Everyday Living post, which I cropped a little because I was using a square canvas
I also “painted” it in Waterlogue, which is a great way to simplify a complex subject, breaking it down into simpler masses of color
Then I printed both versions out for reference while painting
I used a limited color palette, and a black underpainting
Mixing your own color variations from a limited palette keeps your painting cohesive
A few strokes establish where the main blooms will be
Next the sky, grass and some greens are added
Building the fence
Details to the blooms
Adding leaves and other details
Lightening the sky and finishing blooms
All done

Oh, Jenna, I love this painting. Those hydrangeas absolutely dance on the canvas! And it’s a perfect design for your Society6 items! I follow Pam’s blog and I’m sure she’ll be excited to see how beautifully you’ve captured her hydrangeas! I know absolutely nothing about painting, and I love your tutorials on how you create your lovely and sometimes whimsical art. I do have a question, though. I always thought painters started with a white background. I never knew that sometimes you start with a black background. Could you please explain what the advantage is to doing that? I continue to learn so much from your Fearless Fridays!! Have a great weekend. Rosie
Good question Rosie! It’s called an underpainting and I like to use black because it lends a dramatic effect to the finished painting. Many artists use a color on the color wheel that is opposite from the dominant color in their painting, like a red underpainting for a green landscape, which seems to make it glow. It’s all personal preference. I use black and let it peek through on purpose because I like the emphasis it provides. I hope that makes some kind of sense, thanks so much for your interest!
Thanks, Jenna. Is it the emphasis you’re talking about that makes the flowers “pop out” from the painting with almost a 3D effect? It’s just amazing how an artist like yourself can bring such beauty to life.
the black underpainting adds depth to the whole painting and contrast which does make the flowers stand out, also the highlights done with thick paint strokes are what seems to make them pop out too, thanks for your interest Rosie, and great questions! >
