Fearless Friday, Hydrangea Vase

I did very little artwork during the holidays
and just like anything else,
when you stop or reduce time spent,
you get rusty…
I decided to do a quick and loose watercolor
to get back in the groove

This was painted from a photo by my friend Pam from Everyday Living
She and her fellow Monday Morning Bloomers,
Their gorgeous floral arrangements
have inspired many of my paintings

No sketch today, I just wanted to jump right in

I kept the flowers abstract

Simple shapes indicating the blooms and leaves

A couple of light strokes to indicate the vase

I used black ink to define the petals and leaves
and blue ink to draw the pattern on the vase

At this point I wasn’t thrilled,
some artists call this the ugly stage
so I put it aside to see with fresh eyes the next day

I darkened the vase pattern with a deep blue fine tip marker,
and used light washes and splatter for the background
It’s not a masterpiece but it was a fun experiment
and a nice way to warm up

“Hydrangea Vase” 7″ x 10″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold press paper

Here are some more paintings from previous Fearless Fridays
that were painted from floral arrangements
by the Monday Morning Bloom gals

Jenna, what a pleasant surprise. The hydrangea painting is beautiful and I am so happy you painted it. The vase is a cherished gift from a friend many, many years ago. Once again, I am honored that you would paint my hydrangea vase! Happy Friday!
Thank you Pam, I love to paint your beautiful arrangements!
Jenna, I love your beautiful watercolor rendition of Pam’s flower arrangement with your ‘signature’ splatter effect! I was so flattered when you chose my Ball jar bouquets and garden gloves as an inspiration photo to paint. Happy Friday. ♥
Thank you Mary, I am always inspired by your beautiful arrangements and vignettes!
Good Friday Morning, Jenna.
I am always impressed by your artwork! You have a way of just dancing with the colors so eloquently while painting with watercolors.
I love following the gals in Monday Morning Blooms and how fun you bring it all back to life with your artwork!
Happy Friday Jenna!
Thanks Nancy, I always want to paint their arrangements!
Pam on Everyday Living always has such beautiful and peaceful photos of her arrangements. I also love her yard full of colorful flowers. You’ve captured this photo perfectly. Ahhh . . . spring will be here soon!
Thanks Leslie Anne, yes her garden is amazing!
So pretty Jenna!
Boy, this Friday sure sneaked up on me!
Thanks Dorothy, have a great weekend!
Jenna, it’s always a treat to see your latest piece of art, and the Monday Morning Bloom girls certainly offer some wonderful images to inspire. Each of you share wonderful accounts full of beauty and inspiratiomn.
Thanks so much Sarah!
This is so cool to see not only what inspires you, but the process you go through. Happy Friday, Jenna!
Thanks Rita, stay safe in all the snow this weekend!
Not being an artist, I would not have thought about needing to warm up again after a hiatus, but it just makes sense. Your flowers are lovely.
Thanks Linda, it felt good to have a paint brush back in my hand!
Not much else to say Jenna…you have such talent with your brushes. Lovely, simply lovely.
Thank you Kari 🙂
You didn’t get rusty at all, it’s beautiful as always Jenna!
Oh, thanks Martha 🙂
Beautiful arrangement and painting, Jenna. 💚 It always feels so good to get back to painting again. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Patty Anne, nothing better than a little art therapy!
Very nice, Jenna. This is one of my favorites!
Thank you 😘
Well done, very pretty!
Thank you Cyndi 🙂
This is great!! Pinned to give it a try. Your directions are really easy to follow – thanks!

Thanks so much for stopping by – now I’m going to go dig all my paints out!
Oh good, happy painting!
Beautiful painting and I love the colors! I’d be so scared to “splatter” a painting ~ only a true artist can do that.
Thank you Allyson, it is a little scary to splatter, but it’s also lots of fun 🙂
I know what you mean by rusty. I picked up a brush for the first time since fall yesterday and it just didn’t feel “right.” I’ll get there again, but I it’s an odd feeling, after feeling rather comfortable with it all!
