Fearless Friday, “Perfume”

Glass has always fascinated me,
I have collected unusual pieces,
I had a painted glassware business for 15 years,
and now I am determined to learn to capture
the magic of glass with watercolor

Let’s paint this pretty perfume bottle today
The reference photo is from Unsplash,
a free photo reference library

I started with a pencil sketch
which involved a lot of erasing until it felt right!
Once I have the sketch done,
I try to erase it to the point where I can still see the lines for reference
but they won’t show in the finished painting

First a light color wash

Then several shades of Quinacridone Gold for the gold bands,
leaving some paper showing for highlights

Next I added the dark linear areas

Deeper shadows

I added shadows to the crystal topper and the top part of the bottle
with light shades of sepia and Quinacridone Gold
and added more mid tone shadows
to the bottle and cast shadow

To finish I added faint blue reflective lines to the crystal topper
Quinacridone Gold lines indicate the name on the label
“Perfume” 5″ x 7″ watercolor on 140 lb. cold pressed paper

The secret to painting glass is to really study it,
investigate what you actually see,
not what you think you see…
glass has many layers of reflected colors and shapes

As you can see in the photo above of cola pouring over ice,
the glass and ice cubes pick up multiple reflections
of the bottle and the liquid
The surrounding elements also influence the colors and reflections
like these glass balls below

Try your hand at painting something glass,
it is a lot of fun!
Be Fearless!

Thanks to you, I’m getting better at water! Love this!
Oh, that is so nice to hear, thank you Jeanie!
This is awesome! You captured the perfume bottle perfectly! Great job on the ice / coke painting also. Pretty colors in the glass balls. I like glass too and LOVE combing the beach for beach glass. 😄
Thank you so much Cyndi! I love to comb the beach for shells and glass too, forgot about that!!
Beautiful! I had a collection of perfume bottles some years ago, from a time when I worked in a department store in the cosmetics department. Some were really beautiful works of art. One of my favorites was the Lalique bottle with a dove as the stopper. I do still have several glass art bottles for perfume. Perfect for your watercolors, and this one is lovely.
You’re so right Carole, perfume bottles are a work of art! Thank you!
I think you’ve learned how it’s done! Your perfume bottle is beautiful……..
