Fearless Friday, Tomato Canape Recipe Illustration

Let’s illustrate a recipe today 🍅
This is a fun project and you can practice different lettering styles too
I chose one of my favorite appetizers
Tomato Canapes with Bacon Chive Aioli
The canapes are colorful and the recipe is very short,
making it a good choice for recipe illustration

I used 2 photos from my blog post here

I started with a rough pencil sketch,
going shape by shape,
beginning with 2 halved tomatoes and a lettuce edge

I don’t worry too much about the sketch,
I just am trying to get familiar with drawing the subject
When I go back over the sketch with ink
I can make corrections as I go

After drawing the ingredients, I added the text

I used a 01 waterproof micron liner pen to finish the illustration
and then erased all the pencil

Originally I was going to use watercolor,
but I changed my mind and used markers
I bought a new set for Christmas that I absolutely love,
Caliart 121 colors dual tip markers, great price and good quality
They are organized by color on the lowest level of my Tiered Art Tray

Now the coloring fun begins!

I used shades of red, yellow and orange for the tomato halves
and shades of green for the romaine

More green shades on the green onions
and reds and browns for the bacon

I filled in the grape tomatoes with shades of red and orange
and began coloring the letters

Next the mayonnaise jar and it was almost done

I used a Zig Clean Color Dot pen to fill in the background
“Tomato Canapes” recipe illustration, 7″ x 10″ on mixed media paper

This is the 3rd recipe illustration I have done recently,
I encourage you to try this, it’s a lot of fun!
You could frame your illustration and hang it in the kitchen
or gift it to a friend along with the recipe ingredients
I used colored pencils for the Salsa Bread illustration below

Jenna, I love this recipe card you have created. This would be so cute framed and hung in the kitchen. It would definitely make a lovely gift along with the ingredients. Happy Friday!
Thank you Pam, it’s a fun way to share a favorite recipe!
Your art always amazes me Jenna. You are super talented!
Thanks Martha, art is always the highlight of my day 🙂
I absolutely love this! So many gift ideas come to mind! Thank you for inspiring us.
Thank you Dorothy, I want to do more of these, it’s lots of fun and a great way to preserve favorite recipes
My mind is thinking ahead!
Jenna, this is so cute! I love both of your ideas of either framing it and hanging it on the wall or gifting it. You have the best ideas! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks so much Shannon!
Such a fun project! I love both the recipe and the illustration…would be great to frame it and hang it on the kitchen world :-)) You are so talented!
Thanks Angie, this is fun, I will be doing more for sure!
Jenna, I love how you create! This is and all of these are just gorgeous. You have really perfected this art. Not to mention you have delicious goodies to nibble for lunch ❤️ Happy Friday…….
Thank you Emily, I will be doing more of these, it’s a lot of fun! The tomato canapes have been a staple for gatherings for many years, everyone always gobbles them up!
This is very cool. And I want to make the recipe as well! Happy Spring this weekend!
Thanks Leslie Anne, the tomato canapes are always lapped up 🌷
Jenna what an adorable way to present a recipe. You make it look so simple (as always) and your step by step instructions are perfect. Now if I could just do it. I have a lot of liner pens, a few with dual tips and I love the precision of them. I’ll leet you know how my work turns out. I am still a little shaky but sometimes that helps with shading. LOL

It sounds like you have some good art supplies, I hope you have fun playing around with them! If you’re not confident with free sketching, you can always trace a picture to color. Colored pencils are great ways to shade markers and you can get a good set at a reasonable price. Have fun!
Edible art! You’re making me hungry! Looks great from both an art standpoint and recipe!
ha ha, thanks Rita, I’ve made these tomato canapes forever, they are always a hit!
You always give the best appetizer recipes. I have pinned so many and I also follow you on Pinterest. Your illustrations are delightful and you make them look so easy. Unfortunately mine quite look like yours.😀 But it’s fun to try.
Thanks so much Nancy, you have made my day, I’m so glad!
This would make the cutest recipe book EVER! It reminds me of some of Susan Branch’s cookbooks with the wonderful illustrations along with the recipes. Your recipes always rock!
Thanks Jeanie, that’s quite a compliment, I love Susan Branch!
I love your recipe illustrations. Another FABULOUS idea, Jenna. Thank you so very much.
This is a lot of fun Rosie, I will be doing more, maybe even a small book. Thank you for your always sweet words!
