capturing life as it’s happening~
2 of my favorite Urban Sketchers
are Charlie Breen and Ian Fennelley

They have an incredibly loose style and add watercolor with abandon~
lines don’t have to be straight, and colors are vibrant

I have dabbled in the urban sketching technique before
Tractor
Today I’m going to share an interior done with this loose style
and then show you the same drawing done with colored pencil
AND
there is a free printable for you to color or paint yourself!
This is the photo I worked from by Tracey Rapisardi
Naturally I was attracted to the bright colors, summer feel, and the flowers
The color intense areas draw the eye in
and the unpainted areas fade into the background
The blue vase on the table catches your eye
and leads you to the deep pink in the arm of the chair
and brings your eye to the cupboard of plates on the wall
The colored pencil version is far less dramatic,
which one do you like better?
I have a long way to go learning this technique,
but it’s a lot of fun and I want to do many more cityscapes and cafes
Here are the steps as I painted the interior
I started with the foreground, drawing the pot and bowl on the table
I used a desktop easel with the photo reference next to my sketchbook
No pencil sketch today,
I drew with a waterproof micron .01 liner pen
The charm of the urban sketching techique is the “unperfectness”
Things are quickly sketched
You are trying to capture the essence of what you are seeing,
not trying to draw perfect straight lines or representations
By starting with the foreground
I was then able to place the chair behind the table with the plant
and then add the side table with pitcher
Next I drew the wall cabinet and the window
Then I added more details
Time for color!
By using intense areas of color and leaving other areas white,
you can create dramatic focal points
To finish I added a few more details with ink
“Summer Cottage” 7″ x 10″ watercolor and ink on mixed media paper
You can print out the drawing and color it with pencils, marker or watercolor
Print it on card stock for colored pencils or marker
Print it on mixed media paper if you want to use watercolor
{it won’t print well on watercolor paper}

Jenna, This is a wonderful idea. i sent your drawing to the printer. Then it dawned on me that if I touch water to the printer ink the outlines will bleed. I think I should trace your drawing onto my mixed media using Saral carbon then ink over your drawing.

I like them both for different reasons, though I lean more toward the watercolor. I am in awe of your looseness. I might have to try this experiment and force myself to draw without light box or graphite and do something like this — not worry about all the intricacies. Because these are terrific!
Thank you Jeanie, it is a fun technique, I think one of the secrets is to use shorter strokes, more like sketching than drawing, and using blobs of color rather than staying “in the lines” I hope you give it a try!
