Fearless Friday, Abstract Flowers

Today we’re going to paint some colorful abstract flowers
This is something I encourage anyone to try,
it is simply dabbing paint onto a canvas
in simple shapes to create a fantasy garden
of abstract happy flowers

Colorful paintings by Julie Marriott
were my inspiration

She masterfully combines series of strokes
and shapes in beautiful colors

I had a prepared black canvas and decided to make it mostly blue
for the flower background

I applied several shades of blue haphazardly with a large palette knife,
purposely leaving it uneven and random for interest

Now for the flowers
Pink petals were painted with a mix of red, white and yellow

Simple strokes and shapes, fast and loose

Next I added a mix of pale yellow flowers

Stems with several shades of green
{Cerulean blue & Cad yellow and Ultramarine Blue with Cad yellow}

More green with leaf shapes

Next I added some smaller shapes for height
and visual interest in the composition

I added orange stamens to the center of the flower
that’s bending over in the middle of the painting

I filled in the negative spaces with large light blue dots

A happy mix of colors and shapes
“Fantasy Garden” 8″ x 10″ acrylic on canvas

This is similar to the Whimsical Abstract Floral we did earlier this year

I hope you’ll try this fun and simple technique!

Very fun! I just purchased a few abstract prints from a local artist. While mine are landscapes, she also paints florals. I find them quite fun, and can’t wait to rotate them in my home art. I love watching your process, Jenna.
Thanks so much Rita!
As always, your creative process is interesting to watch. The fantasy garden is fun and colorful. I have become a fan of abstract art. Love this, Jenna!
Thanks Pam, this is a fun and relaxing technique~

Thanks Patty Anne, it’s fun to paint with abandon!
I love it, Jenna! My abstracts look like mud because I overwork them so I just don’t paint them anymore, lol. Have a lovely weekend!
Thanks RJ, abstracts are a lot harder than they look aren’t they!
Fun tutorials Jenna. You make it seem so easy with step by step instruction. Happy weekend.
Thanks Linda!
This may sound goofy…but I LOVE that middle yellow flower! The lines and the little bit of red…my eyes go right to it every time. Great job. Love your talent!
Thanks so much Diane!
Love all the colors, so fresh and vivid…and this year of sun has made the flowers brilliant to match your fab painting. Great tutorials, too. Hugs, Sandi
