Take-out Tuesday, Grilled Cheese Sandwich “Chips” and Air Fryer Grilled Ham & Swiss

One of my food focuses this month is grilled cheese sandwiches

I think I could live on grilled cheese sandwiches,

they are such perfect comfort food

Grilled cheese sandwiches can be as simple as bread, butter and cheese

Or you can fill them with endless mouthwatering combinations!

Here’s a fun twist on grilled cheese,

grilled cheese “chips!”

Just cheese, bread and butter

Cut crusts off bread and assemble sandwiches

with one slice of cheese in between 2 slices of bread

Smash bread down with a rolling pin after building sandwiches

Butter both sides and cut into triangles

Bake sandwiches for 10 minutes, turn them over

Return to oven and bake 5-10 more minutes

Time will vary because of different ovens, bread type used

and personal preference

You might want to experiment with a few

to figure out the best time for yours

Remember, these are called chips, so they’re a little crunchy

Decrease baking time if you want a softer result

The cheese will ooze out a little, forming little bites of frico along the edges

Serve as a snack, dip into soup, enjoy with a salad,

or use as a dipper in a variety of dips, hot or cold

Here are a few more grilled cheese combos you might want to try

a Savory Apple Pie Quesadilla

It’s perfect for Fall full of sweet apples and cranberries

with white Cheddar and bacon

You can make it with tortillas

or bread like a traditional grilled cheese

One of my favorite combos is fig jam, pears, bacon, & bleu cheese

Add some Gouda to make it extra cheesy or

skip the bleu if you’re not a fan,

and just use a flavorful Gouda or White Cheddar

Grown Up Grilled Cheese

My current go to favorite grilled cheese sandwich

is made in my Air Fryer

with ham, Swiss cheese, and a tangy spread

I vary the spread between Maple Bacon Aioli,

tangy Sweet Hot mustard, and Bourbon Bacon jam

Stonewall Kitchen condiments are available in higher end grocery stores

Click here to go to their store locater

Spread one piece of bread with condiment of choice

then layer ham, and then cheese on top

Top with another slice of bread,

and butter both sides of the sandwich

Cook sandwich in the air fryer or in a skillet

My air fryer has racks instead of a basket

so you don’t need to flip the sandwich

I set the fryer at 350 degrees for 6 minutes

Increase time if you want more browning or make adjustments for your air fryer

The sandwich pictured is lightly toasted and cheese is melty

I could have cooked it several minutes longer but I was hungry 😂

I am going to make tomato soup and use your recipe for “chips” for soup croutons. Thanks Jenna.

  2. Nancy says:

I need this with a big bowl of chili or tomato basil soup.
    Yum!

  3. Jenna, I am also a big fan of grilled cheese sandwiches and could eat them at least once a week. I especially love them with chili or tomato soup. I am going to try the “chips” this weekend.

It is a cool start to a Tuesday, but I love it!

  4. Crusty bread and oozing cheese…I love the combination and would devour the whole plate of sandwich chips!

  5. Jessica says:

Air fryer? That’s so cool. I didn’t know sandwiches could go in there! Love all your grilled cheese ideas.

  6. Shannon@Belle Bleu Interiors says:

Jenna, I agree that grilled cheese sandwiches are the perfect comfort food. This recipe turns them into the perfect snack or appetizer. Happy Tuesday!

  7. My mind is being blown at this very second. How did I never think to flatten and crisp this sandwich in the oven? I love grilled cheese. I love chips. It all makes sense. If you could work Harry Connick Jr. in there somewhere, I’d be in trifecta heaven.

  8. As a fan of unique grilled cheese sandwiches this appetizer recipe is one, I will try in the very near future!

  9. I can even see them sliced a little smaller to pop into the mouth for football games:@)

  10. Those look delicious. I’d take those to Cork Poppers but I’m betting they are best served/dipped warm. But oh, who doesn’t love grilled cheese in any of its options!

Thinking of you and hoping your ocean home is safe. Every time I see a tornado hit the FL gulf, I cringe for you.

  11. Kitty says:

Mmmmm both of these recipes sound like perfect comfort food, Jenna. I really need some of those Stonewall Jackson condiments.

  12. lghiggins says:

Such great, delicious ideas. Is there anything better than melted cheese? (well, besides bacon and chocolate–and not together).🙃

  13. Mary says:

So many tasty grilled cheese versions Jenna! ♥
