Fearless Friday, Paint & Doodle!

Today I want to share a fun method
that will build your confidence as an artist~
you literally can not make a mistake!

I call this technique “paint and doodle”
Load a round brush with watercolor and paint a few simple shapes

Continue to add more shapes,
using a lot of water with your color
so the color will bleed and puddle on the paper

Use whatever colors you like and place shapes anywhere on the paper

Continue painting your fantasy garden with various shapes and colors

See how the colors “bleed” into the paper as the water dries
leaving ruffled edges in some of the shapes

Let the paint dry~
you can use a hand held personal fan to speed up this process
or use the corner of a paper towel to absorb unwanted puddles
Then pick up a liner pen and doodle!

Doodle freely, loosing outlining the colored shapes
and adding lines wherever you want
Keep strokes very loose,
and add some scribbles in the flower centers

Next a few black dots scattered about for drama

And some large color dots to make everything pop!
“Fantasy Garden” 9″ x 12″ watercolor, ink and marker on mixed media paper

It’s also fun to try using a limited color palette like blue and green
I began this one by putting a large puddle of water on the paper,
then dropping the paint into the water with a brush
and letting the color move and bleed at will

As the colors blend into each other and the water dries
an interesting magical shape is created

A few more shapes…

Then, time to doodle!

Very fast and loose lines create the flowers,
and then I decided to add more green

This time I added more lines with a turquoise blue pen
and watercolor splatter to finish

I hope you’ll give this technique a try~
Gather a few flower photos and images
to inspire your colors, shapes and composition
It’s so much fun and anything goes!

Be Fearless!

I love doing this technique although I don’t do it as much as I should. I especially love your blues and greens together. So happy! Playing with water and bleeds is so much fun and they’re wonderful for flowers. I love the ones you did!
Thank you Jeanie, hope you’re feeling better and Happy Painting!

Thanks Linda, it’s fun to let the paint do its own thing!
