Fearless Friday, Watercolor Bird on a Branch

A recent prompt for the January 2023 Doodlewash art challenge
was “branches”
I often go to Pixabay for free photos to paint
and when I searched for branches on their site
this photo of a bird caught my eye

Birds are a little out of my comfort zone so I began with a pencil sketch
drawing and erasing until the shape was right

I started with a light yellow wash and then added darker yellow
and gray blue strokes to indicate his feathery chest

I decided to keep the branches, leaves and flowers more abstract
so the bird would really stand out

A little splatter to finish
“Bird on a Branch” 8″ x 8″ watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper

Can you tell I’m thinking about Spring?
Happy creating and

[…] week we painted a simple Bird on a branch with […]
This gives me a spring feeling 🙂 the colour is just gorgeous.
Thank you Angie!
Jenna, Your inspiration photo looks like a chickadee that was colorized in yellow and blue. I love your beautiful and artistic rendition with your signature splatter, so colorful! Happy Friday ♥
Thank you Mary, have a good weekend!
Great rendering, Jenna! I’m thinking spring too!
Thank you Rita 🙂
What a pretty bird, is it a real species? Spring is on my mind as well with the unusually warm January we’ve been having.
I have no idea, it certainly looks real in the photo I used to paint from. Thanks Carole, it’s supposed to get colder this weekend, snow flurries are in our forecast today!
Beautiful Jenna! Hugs
Thank you Kari! Have a great weekend!
Your bird is so darned cute! Well done and so cheerful. Gets my mind off the gloom outside!
Thank you Jeanie, yes painting brightly dispells gloom!
Thank you Mary 🙂
Very cheery, colorful and created to perfection!
I love how you teach us to layer.
Thanks Leslie Anne, happy painting!
I went to “at Home” today. I had thought about picking up something wintery for my front porch area–wreath or swag perhaps. To my surprise, there was nothing there. A small Valentine area and then they moved right into Easter and Spring. I guess I learned my lesson! Your bird tutorial is wonderful as is the end product!
Yes, it’s hard to shop right now, stores can be bare! I’m not a fan of winter, hurry Spring!
I love him, Jenna, he is so cute! The whole composition is great, and I like how you painted the branches, too. I hope you’re having a great weekend and staying warm!
Thanks RJ, it’s a good weekend to stay cozy with a paint brush or a good book!
For being out of your comfort zone with birds you did an amazing job on your feathered friend. Beautiful artwork! Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty.
Thank you so much Allyson!
Jenna, you did a beautiful job – especially for something that was out of your comfort zone! It sure is a pretty bird – I had no idea birds came in that color – and I love the splatter on the finished picture. Did I read snow in your forecast? Yikes! Hope you have a great week anyway
Thank you Kim, it was fun to paint! We didn’t get snow, just very cold for a few days after awful tornadoes last week, but it’s back to warmer temps now, almost 70 yesterday, much better 🙂
You did a wonderful job! Such a cute little bird on a branch. I haven’t used watercolors since college…
Thank you Joanne!
So pretty! I hadn’t thought of looking at a photo for inspiration, but that makes a lot of sense.
Thank you Sally! I get photos to paint from at Unsplash.com and Pixabay.com
