Fearless Friday, A Day at the Beach

Even if a day at the beach isn’t in your plans this summer,
you can always bring the beach to you in a painting!

Today we’re going to do a quick watercolor sketch
using a painting by oil painter Rene Wiley
I was drawn to this painting by the bright colors and bold strokes
It’s interesting to reinterpret another artist’s work in a different medium
I did a VERY light pencil sketch of the umbrella and chairs
and began painting the light areas

After getting the umbrella and chairs established
I began to add darker layers

Time to add in the sand, sea and sky
“A Day at the Beach” after Rene Wiley, 9″ x “12” watercolor on 140 lb. cold press paper

When you don’t have time to do a complete painting,
you can still do some quick watercolor sketches to practice,
improve your skills, explore a subject,
or just relax and enjoy!
Be Fearless!

Love seeing your artwork come to life Jenna! Happy Friday. ♥
Thank you Mary, have a lovely weekend~
I always enjoy your wonderful tutorials. Another fabulous painting by you!
Enjoy your weekend, dear one!
You too, thanks Nancy!
Good morning, Jenna. I love this watercolor! The umbrella is colorful! If I plan a day at the beach, an umbrella is a must. We hit 100 degrees yesterday. Stay cool 💛
Yikes! It’s hot here too, but the breeze comes up by lunch time so that helps!
So simple and yet so very cheerful. I want to be there!
Thank you Dorothy, instant relaxation!
I love how basically the same thing can look so different — not even the same painting. But then, how many subjects are truly different in the world? I took a photo in Myrtle Beach years ago — almost exactly the same, apart from the colors of the umbrellas and style of chairs!
The medium makes a big difference, if I painted this in acrylic or pastel this painting would look entirely different!
Always a treat to see your artwork Jenna. You make it seems so easy. Happy weekend.
Thank you Linda, enjoy your pool!
Good morning, Jenna! I always enjoy seeing your artwork! The watercolor beach painting is beautiful. The colors are so pretty. Have a wonderful weekend, sweet friend!
Thanks so much Shannon, I wish you a wonderful weekend too!
Loved this!
Thanks so much!
It is so interesting to see the two takes. The original with its bright colors would go well in our rooms decorated with Mexican art, but your softer pastel colors appeals to me more for other rooms–very relaxing and peaceful. Have a great weekend!
Thank you Linda, each medium produces a different result, if I painted this in acrylic or pastel it would be 2 more different painting of this same subject.
Thanks for sharing your creative painting methods with me! Living very close to a lake we love our beach days!!!!!
There’s nothing like a view of the water!
Your watercolor at the beach is lovely especially the soothing blue and green colors. I always enjoy seeing how you bring your paintings alive – so pretty
Thank you so much Judee!
The is so pretty Jenna – I love the soft colors. So serene and I can imagine the sounds of the waves. It’s +34 here (~93 and hot for us) and the beach looks wonderful! Happy Monday!
Thank you Kim, I think it’s hot everywhere, but the sea breezes down here are wonderful!
