Recipe Box, Crescent Roll Dough, Yay or Nay?

I ran across a very interesting article on Epicurious here about using crescent roll dough

It seems they ran a recipe video on their website for easy breakfast pastries using crescent roll dough, and the readers went wild!

At last count, the video was viewed over 226,000 times, and the reactions were dramatic.  Some were horrified, some disappointed, some offended, some worried, and some were positive reactions, plus every emotion in between.

Ultimately Epicurious’ response was real.  Yes, Epicurious is devoted to good food prepared well.  But they also feel like it’s important to live in the real world where the plumbing leaks, your check bounces, the sitter cancels, and the dog tracks mud all over your new designer rug…

another words, crescent roll dough can be very handy…

Some pointed out that it’s acceptable to use frozen puff pastry, so why not crescent roll dough?  And if you’re using French bread do you have to make the baguette from scratch? And is it acceptable to use store bought herbs, or must you grow your own? Must you buy your vegetables from the farmer’s market or can you get them at the grocery store…it’s really quite endless…

Epicurious responded with this, “We see this recipe as one example of the authenticity we always strive for—honest advice and realistic help when facing the challenge of getting food (or the occasional treat) on the table on a hectic Saturday morning. Because sometimes a from-scratch stack of pancakes just isn’t going to happen.”

Thank you.

So how do you feel about Crescent Rolls?

I rest my case…

Let’s end with this very important point.  Oftentimes convenience foods are not very nutritious, but as Epicurious states, “for the record: we know these  rolls {video for 3 Ingredient Morning Buns here} aren’t exactly nutritious, and we don’t recommend them for breakfast every day.”

I don’t always love to cook, and I do have some go to convenience foods I rely on for ease of preparation.  At my house, we don’t eat treats everyday, and most of the time our table is a rainbow of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein…

And possibly BBQ something…

So, how do you feel about the “crescent roll dough controversy,” Yay or Nay?

I’m a total YAY! I’m for anything that makes cooking easier. And if all those beautiful examples of yumminess above are made with crescent dough, I’m sold! 😀

  2. Lynn says:

I think folks just like to get upset these days… And I’m lovin’ those pumpkin walnut spirals, wish I had one now:@)

  3. Jodi says:

Yay! They are versatile and delish! 👍👍👍

  4. lorigreer says:

Love these recipes and I say “yay” to crescent rolls!

  5. I say yay too. I totally agree with Epicuriou’ response, we live in the real world. I use pre-made pie crust too. Your recipe list is a perfect example of how the simple can become delightful, and isn’t that the heart of good cooking?

  6. Rosie M. says:

I absolutely LOVE crescent roll dough. My “go to” hors d’oeuvre for every large family gathering is baked brie wrapped in crescent roll dough and it is my “go to” hors d’oeuvre because it is requested EACH event! (I’ve had to give out the recipe numerous times, as well!) Not to mention, that crescent rolls are on every holiday table. And when my children were growing up, “pigs in a blanket” made with crescent rolls were often requested and made an easy dinner after working all day. Yes, we live in a REAL world and need REAL WORLD solutions to feeding family and friends when necessary (gotta love crescent roll cinnamon/sugar roll ups when unexpected company shows up!) Bravo to Epicurious!! Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

    • Thanks Rosie, when I ran across the Epicurious article I was shocked at the negativity of the comments, and felt like I had to share and see how my readers feel…Yes, I should have included “pigs” in this round up, they are always on our menu for football parties, and the kiddos devour them at our family Christmas celebration. I love your cinnamon sugar roll-ups too, I must make those soon! >

  7. Liz Mackie says:

Like all the recipes. Thank you and have a Great Sunday.

  8. Kitty says:

I am a Yay, Jenna! I am not a food snob whatsoever, and I’ve written that in my post for tomorrow. I’ve also found that with the grands, it’s important to make memories and just have fun in the kitchen. Sometimes we make things from scratch, but mostly not. Life is too short to not use crescent rolls!!

  9. ha ha, I agree Kitty, thank you!

  10. Kim says:

Personally, I love the stuff! Crescent rolls are great for dinner rolls in a pinch and many other delicious meals – from daybreak to dark. I vote Yay!

  11. Jenna, I do like to classify myself as a foodie, but certainly not a snob, and I love from scratch food! But I personally love crescent rolls. I could dig into any of your round-up. I guess this is also a part of political correctness now. Why so much negativity about the beloved crescent roll? Happy Monday,
    Pam

  12. Julie says:

Hello Jenna, I say Yay! I love to make quick and easy recipes and why not use that dough. I love all the ways you have used it in different recipes.
Thanks always for sharing your recipes with us at Cooking and Crafting with J & J.
    Enjoy the week.

  13. Leslie Anne Tarabella says:

I’m a cuisine hypocrite because I love using pre-made ingredients, but then hide the container in the bottom of the trash can and act like I baked it all from scratch!!! Hahahaha! MMmmmm! Just like granny made!

  14. I’m all about balance. If one’s diet is decently healthy most of the time a splurge every now and then is fine.

  15. Mary says:

Jenna, I’m all for convenience with ready made dough! I think the article created a stir because it was Epicurious and their average visitor isn’t looking for “fast-food” recipes. Your round-up is mouth watering 🙂

  16. I absolutely love baking from scratch but will not turn my nose up at a shortcut. Be it cake mix or crescent roll dough. There is room for all kinds of baking and cooking and I love the comparisons about herbs and veggies. Excellent post and love your recipes!

  17. After reading this post, I am convinced that I need to keep a stock of crescent rolls in my fridge!

  18. JESS44903 says:
