Fearless Friday, Whimsical Abstract Floral in Acrylic

As artists we all inspire each other,

and many instructors encourage artists

to use other artists work as a model,

and try to copy their painting as a way of learning and exploring

I recently shared a tutorial on painting bunnies

which inspired my friend Patti @ Pandora’s Box to paint Easter napkins

Didn’t they turn out adorable?

Great job Patti!

I have painted many canvases after Matisse, Degas,

and a variety of other less famous artists

Today I’m going to share the steps for doing a whimsical abstract floral

by Jenny Be, an artist I found on Daily Paintworks Gallery

I used a similar color palette and composition

and added a few elements of my own

Very similar yet different…

This was a quick and fun painting session,

and a great way to loosen up and just play

I started with a canvas I had painted black

and painted the bottom of the pink vase

Next I placed the blooms

then leaves

Branches

I deepened the colors on the vase

The blooms got detail with layers of pink and white

I added shades of turquoise for interest

and a dab of the unexpected

and painted white dots on the middle blooms

The leaves were finished

and details were added to the spiky petaled blooms

To finish, I added a yellow highlight to the vase

and painted blue dots in the foreground

The edges were painted with white checks

“Whimsy” 8″ x 10″ acrylic on canvas

I had a lot of fun painting this,

a no rules anything goes type painting…

I prefer to work on larger surfaces

but a small painting like this can be completed quickly

One thing I do is near the end,

when I feel like the painting is almost finished,

I stop and leave it overnight

My easel is in my kitchen

so I keep the painting in view for the rest of the day,

looking at it when I walk by…

the next day I will add a stroke or two and sign it to finish

For this painting the final strokes were the yellow highlights,

the blue dots and white checked edge

Please send me photos of anything I’ve inspired you to do

and I’ll share them on a future Fearless Friday!

Have fun and Be Fearless!

  2. Jenna, I love your whimsical abstract floral. It just says happy. Wishing you a beautiful weekend!

  3. Though black is never on my palette, I love to work on dark surfaces and papers. This project really pops, and a whole series on black, might be a really fun thing and seller also. Hugs, Sandi

I did see Patti’s napkins inspired by your art! They are adorable! I love this painting because it reminds me of the Bloomsbury group. I would love to have that style art hand-painted all over my house, just like at Charleston House! Brava!!! Have a fun weekend, Sweet Friend!

  7. Love this! The bright colors really pop against the black!

  9. I really love your diversity of style and media. Starting with the black just blows my mind! I usually leave things overnight too — and add to them about half the time!

    • Thanks Jeanie, I love to paint on black, it adds so much drama and the colors really pop…yes, fresh eyes overnight can really make a difference with finishing touches!
