Fearless Friday, Pink Blooms

We’re going to paint a vase of flowers today with watercolor

This is the photo I used as my subject

I chose it because I liked the color and texture variations

and the play of lights and darks in the stems and water

When I do a sketch for a watercolor, it is very light

so it won’t show through the paint

Sorry it’s hard to see

Once the sketch is finished I applied liquid masking,

or frisket to the areas where I wanted to save white highlights

Remember to use an old paint brush for applying the masking

because it is like glue and can ruin a good brush

The frisket creates a waterproof barrier so you can paint right over it

It is yellowish in color so you can see it on the white paper

I began with light washes over the blooms

Then I began to add leaves and the flower stems

Next I painted the vase and water with shades of Payne’s Gray

Then I added detail to the rose

I hinted at the texture of the pink blooms

with small strokes and shapes

I finished the pink blooms

and added detail to the greens

I darkened the tops of the stems for shadows under the blooms

Now it was time to remove the masking with a rubber cement pick up

You can find the masking fluid and rubber cement pick up

at art supplies stores, Hobby Lobby,

or on Amazon here and here

If the areas are too large or too white,

you can adjust the color with light washes

    I love it, Jenna. The technique and step outs are especially beautiful and don’t you just love Payne’s Gray? I should use my frisket more often. It’s a good reminder.
