Party Panache, Ham and Double Cheese Spirals

We had a fun Father’s Day dinner

honoring my son and my son-in-law last weekend

We wanted to make it extra easy on the guys who usually do the cooking

HHjr did make an incredible guacamole

from a giant avocado CCOG brought us

DD brought pizzas and cheesecake and I made

Cucumber Blueberry Crunch Salad and appetizer spirals

Spirals are one of my favorite appetizers

Not only are they a crowd pleaser,

they can be made with things you probably have on hand

I usually have a can of crescent roll dough

or pizza dough in my refrigerator

You can make so many things with it,

from breakfast to lunch to snacks,

dinner and even dessert!

I had a can of crescent roll sheet dough in the fridge

and plenty of ham and cheese

so I decided to make a different version of

Ham & Swiss Spirals with Mustard Poppy Seed Butter

I used deli Black Forest ham slices with grated sharp cheddar

and tangy bleu cheese crumbles

Prepare your dough on a sheet of parchment paper

It will aid in rolling the dough into a log

and then you can wrap the dough log in it

to chill in the refrigerator for easier cutting

Instead of cutting slices from one end to the other

it is best to cut a filled dough log

starting in the middle and cutting in half,

then cutting the halves in half again,

then slicing each of these smaller 4 logs

into 2 or 4 slices

Put the slices in a greased 9″ x 13″ baking dish,

drizzle with mustard butter,

and bake for about 25 minutes

You can change up the filling in infinite ways,

I will share some more combinations at the end of the post

Ham & Double Cheese Spirals

Make a lot, these will go fast!

Equipment

  • parchment paper
  • 9" x 13" baking dish

Ingredients
  

Spirals

  • 1 can crescent roll sheet
  • 1/2 lb thinly sliced deli smoked ham
  • 4 oz sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 oz bleu cheese crumbles
  • 1/4 cup Maple Bacon Aioli or Mayonnaise

Mustard Butter

  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 T Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 T Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp minced onions
  • 2 tsp poppy seeds, optional

Instructions
 

Spirals

  • Unroll dough into a large rectangle on a piece of parchment paper, pinching seams together if necessary.
  • Spread dough with Aioli or Mayonnaise
  • Place ham on dough in an even layer.
  • Now top with an even layer of cheddar cheese.
  • Sprinkle bleu cheese crumbles over all
  • Beginning at long side, carefully roll dough into a log, using the parchment paper as an aid, and rolling as tightly as possible. Repair any dough tears by pinching back together as you roll.
  • Wrap dough in parchment and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to make slicing easier
  • Carefully slice log roll into 14-16 slices. Place slices, cut side up, into a greased 9" x 13" shallow baking dish
  • Drizzle spirals with mustard butter*
  • Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until dough is puffed and golden
  • Serve warm or at room temperature

Mustard Butter

  • Melt butter and add mustard, minced onions, poppy seeds and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine.

Notes

*Cover dish and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking if desired
You can also use this mustard butter on plain ham biscuits:
Ham Biscuits with Mustard Butter
Prepare frozen small biscuits or rolls according to package directions.  Cut biscuits/rolls in half and brush liberally with mustard butter.  Put a thick piece of ham, or a stack of thin slices, cut to size, on each biscuit/roll bottom and replace top.  Place biscuits/rolls into pan or casserole dish and brush with remaining butter sauce.  Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes until hot. 
You can add a slice of cheese to these biscuits if desired

    This was a lovely way to celebrate Father’s Day for your son and son-in-law. The MC’s tiered stand and black and white cloth was a pretty way to set up nibbles. Your spirals look delicious and I have to try the Almond Spirals. Another recipe keeper, thanks Jenna……..
