Fearless Friday, Raspberry Ripple Sundae

Let’s cool off with some ice cream today…

A big Raspberry Ripple Sundae!

The prompt for this entry for World Watercolor Month was “ripple”

The inspiration photo I used is by Sue Lynn Cotton

I lightly sketched the glass dish first

to make sure I got the proportions right

Then I added the ice cream, whipped cream and cherry

I always sketch very lightly when I’m not using an inked drawing

because the pencil can show through light layers of watercolor

I started with the shadows on the glass,

purposely exaggerating the colors,

Next I painted the raspberry ripple ice cream inside

Next came the whipped cream, chocolate syrup and cherry

At this point it was basically finished, but I wasn’t loving it…

I decided to add some ink outlines to liven it up

And a little raspberry splatter to finish!

“Raspberry Ripple Sundae” 5″ x 8″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold press paper

If you paint with watercolors, what kind of paper do you prefer?

I recently got a pad of hot press watercolor paper,

and I’m not a fan of it yet…

Do you have any tips you’d like to share?

Here’s what I painted for the second week of World Watercolor Month

“Wing” “Gnarled”

“Abrupt” “Hushed”

“Abandon was the prompt for July 13,

but that only conjured up sad images

so I interpreted it in a slightly different way and

painted flowers with “Abandon

“Ripple” “Faithful”

“Effervescent” “Vision”

Doodlewash has an art challenge every month

with a list of prompts you can use for inspiration

or you can simply paint or draw anything you want

Participating in an art challenge is not only fun,

but it pushes you to draw and paint consistently

and provides an opportunity to experiment and try new things

You can learn more about it here

Excellent Jenna! I love the sundae and the way you interpreted abandon. I think my favorite of all is the one with the butterflies. Have a great weekend!

  4. This would look so cute in an old fashioned ice cream parlor. I’m always amazed at your creativity!

  5. I wish there was a good way to erase pencil through watercolor. I’ve tried everything I can think of to no avail! This is VERY happy and cheery!

    • Thank you Jeanie, another thing you can try is sketching with a watercolor pencil in a light shade of the colors you’ll be using so as you apply the watercolor it will blend in

Nice! I thought it was going to be your recipe, but your tutorial is a step by step for the sundae as well as the dessert.

Love your artist rendering of the sundae Jenna! I’ve said this before but I love your ‘signature splatter’. ♥
