Fearless Friday, Caprese Grilled Cheese

Do you ever draw or paint food?

I think it’s a lot of fun…

The cooking theme on the Painted Apron this month

is Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

so let’s draw and paint one!

My inspiration photo was this grilled caprese sandwich with avocado~

doesn’t it make you want to take a bite? 😋

I started with a pencil sketch drawing shape by shape

Don’t let a complex subject intimidate you

Pick a start point and go from there

I started with the top slice of bread and worked my way down

Once satisfied with the drawing

I went over it with a waterproof fine liner pen

and erased the pencil

Remember, if you are having trouble with an initial sketch,

you can always trace a photo

and transfer it to a painting surface with carbon paper

I used gouache for this painting

Gouache is similar to watercolor except that it is opaque

rather than transparent

I started painting from the top down also,

beginning with the top slice of bread,

using a semi dry yellow wash and adding touches of brown

Shades and tones of red and orange for the tomato

Shades of greens for the basil leaves

More green shades for the avocado slices

Pale yellow washes to give the melted mozzarella some dimension

Pale blue gray shadows ground the sandwich

Hungry?

Draw and paint something delicious!
