Fearless Friday, Easter Garden

When the MacKenzie-Childs Spring catalog arrived

I fell in love with the cover and just had to paint it!

I painted the background flowers and foreground moss with watercolor

and used ink and markers for the bunny and eggs

I started with a pencil sketch of the bunny

{please forgive the bluish paper, I was outside and the lighting was tricky}

Then I began to place the blooms, starting with a very pale peach

Then I added yellow and pink roses, making the flowers with circular strokes

Then came leaves in varying shades of green

I purposely wanted the background flowers to be abstract and loose

I added more petals to the blooms with deeper tones

With the flowers finished I inked the bunny

I did the outline first and then added the checks

I colored the bunny and eggs with markers,

I wanted him to stand out against the busy and colorful surroundings

The final step was adding moss in the foreground

using the wet into wet technique,

laying a wash of clear water over the area and then dropping in sap green

You make painting seem so effortless!

  5. Jenna, your interpretation is beautiful!

I hope your home in the city was spared by the tornadoes. The five that lost their lives in Calhoun County were about fifteen miles from our home in Etowah County The pictures are horrifying!

  6. This is so cheery and fun, Jenna! Love the checked bunny — the black and white is perfect with the colorful blooms. I’ve been painting Easter cards and this would be a perfect one. Very cheery!

  7. Both MKC catalog cover and your painting are just lovely and so springy. I love esp. the bunny…so cute!

  8. Martha says:

He’s wonderful! I love the way he does stand out, and the grass is perfect–it looks magical. Won’t be long now till the bunny ARRIVES!. I found a small door decoration complete with bunny’s cotton tail as if he is running away and it says: “Follow the Bunny–he has chocolate!” So here’s the official BOLO on the bunny, he’s out there, and he’s “carrying”–chocolate eggs, that is. ; ) Georgia Gal
